You probably have a small bottle of rubbing alcohol at home. Most people have it, although they’re not exactly sure what they can use it for. There are two types of rubbing alcohol – ethyl alcohol, which is derived from denatured ethanol and isopropyl alcohol, or 70% alcohol.
Of course, both types are not suitable for consumption, but they have a variety of uses besides their use as a disinfectant. Here are 15 uses for rubbing alcohol you weren’t aware of:
1. Eliminates cold sores
Rub a bit of alcohol on your cold sores to treat them and make them fall off quickly.
2. Deodorizes your shoes
If your shoes smell terrible, there’s a quick fix. Just spray some rubbing alcohol on the inside and leave them to dry in the morning and the odor will be quickly gone.
3. Treat mosquito bites
If you’re out enjoying nature, take a bottle of rubbing alcohol with you. It can easily deal with mosquito bites and keep them away from you.
4. Helps you remove ticks
If you find a tick attached to your skin, rubbing alcohol can help you remove it. Rub it around the parasite and leave it on for a couple of minutes, then slowly take it out with tweezers. If it doesn’t work, we suggest seeking immediate medical help.
5. Treats sore muscles
Rub a bit of rubbing alcohol on your sore muscles after a workout to soothe the pain and help the muscles relax.
6. Removes hard stains
Hard stains on your favorite shirt or pants can be pretty difficult to get rid of but rubbing alcohol can definitely help. Mix a part of rubbing alcohol with 2 parts of water, then pour the mixture in a spray bottle and apply it directly on the affected area. Brush them off and give the piece of clothes a wash and the stain should be already gone.
7. Eliminates the smell of garlic
Garlic is incredibly healthy and should be a part of our diet but cleaning it when preparing a meal can leave a long-lasting foul odor on your hands. Luckily, rubbing them with a bit of rubbing alcohol can get the stench out and make your hands smell better.
8. Removes nail polish
Soak a cotton ball in rubbing alcohol and rub it on your nails to effectively and safely remove your nail polish. This is a much better solution than using acetone or similar cleaners.

Pour a bit of rubbing alcohol and 15 drops of your favorite essential oil in a spray bottle (make sure its mild so it doesn’t burn your skin), then apply it on your armpits. It will eliminate any harmful bacteria and leave a fresh scent behind.

Having a bed bug infestation in your bed? Don’t worry – rubbing alcohol comes to the rescue once more! Simply spray it on your mattress and crack the windows open in your bedroom. Leave it to work for a day and you the bed bugs should be gone.

Scraping off frost from the windshield can be difficult in the winter but spraying some rubbing alcohol on it can remove it in just under 5 minutes! Try this trick and you will be amazed by the results!
13. Fixes a broken eyeshadow
Eyeshadows can burn a hole in your pocket, especially if you go for the high-quality brands. Its even worse if you break it, as you’ll end up giving a lot of money. Luckily, rubbing alcohol can help. Pour some in a spray bottle, then spray it on the broken piece. Now, take a spoon and press the eyeshadow with the oval side to even out the edges. Leave it to solidify for a couple more hours and voila! The eyeshadow will be as good as new!
14. Cleans your glasses perfectly
If you’re wearing prescription eyeglasses, you know how hard it is to clean them spotless sometimes. However, rub a bit of rubbing alcohol on them and wipe with a soft cloth and they should be perfectly clean.
